Loving Yourself
Hello everyone!
Why would someone want to conduct a research on how to love
yourself? Well, this is exactly why I am making this post.
There are times in our lives when we think that because we
are a certain age, with many life experiences, and having grown up in a stable family, this automatically means that we love ourselves. In fact, there are times when
we are so busy helping others and being distracted with life's struggles that
we fail to remember we need to love ourselves. However, in order for anyone to
love someone else, you first have to love yourself. How do you begin to love
yourself?
1. Once you were created this means you are loved by God.
Therefore, your value should not rest on what others say about you or on the
possessions you have but your self-worth must be dependent on the premise that
God loves you.
2. To love yourself means that you will make every effort to
take care of yourself: physical, spiritual, intellectual, psychological and
personal development. For a more fulfilling life, you need to have balance.
A. Eating right and exercising daily
B. Developing a personal relationship with God
C. Upgrading your qualification
D. Confiding in a trusted friend, family member or healthcare practitioner for advice
E. Developing a hobby: enjoy sharing your talent or skills with someone or alone
F. Journaling your thoughts including the goals you want to achieve
G. Giving gratitude for your blessings
3. Loving yourself means that you do not mull over your failures and do nothing to change your circumstances.
Recently I have created 10 goals I want to achieve by the end of the year and writing a children's book and publishing an article in the newspaper are 2 goals I was never comfortable attempting. However, I was never good at telling stories or creative writing but when opportunities arose on the job to write articles for college newsletters, I became enthusiastic about it.
Valorie Burton in her book, Successful Women Think Differently, talks about the growth mindset and the fixed mindset.
The growth mindset person believes that through effort they can learn things they previously did not understand, improving personality traits and even growing in intelligence, they are not as easily discouraged by failure.
A fixed mindset is focused on talent and such individuals believe that one's natural gifts and abilities determine how far one can go in life.
I am learning to re-evaluate how I respond to failures, setbacks and disappointments. Pastor Dr. Dylant Toussaint mentioned once, "When God is your reason to live, then there is no reason to quit."
4. Loving yourself means learning to say no to people and the unrealistic demands they sometimes expect you to fulfill. Taking time to rationalize whether you want to do something or go somewhere doesn't mean that you don't care about people. However, persons in your inner circle are the ones you should feel lead to say yes to as long as it is within reason.
5. Loving yourself means that you need to celebrate your very existence. Your life should not be taken for granted because it is a gift from God. You should take time to pamper yourself and your birthday should not be treated as if it is trivial. When you love yourself you will not abuse your body by over indulging in food, sex, work, or anything else that doesn't allow your body to relax.
Learning to love yourself is really the best gift you could
ever give yourself. As you evolve, you will experience many struggles but you
can overcome these by loving yourself and celebrating your joys and victories.
Thank you for reading and be the best version of yourself.
